To ethanol (100 mL) was added sodium (3.3 g, 14 mmol). After dissolution, thiourea (10.7 g, 14 mmol) and ethyl benzoylacetate (24 mL, 14 mmol) were added. The reaction was heated for 16 hours and the solvent was removed in vacuo. Water was added to dissolve the residue and hydrochloric acid was added and a precipitate formed. The solid was collected and dried in a vacuum oven to give 16 g (56%) of 2-mercapto-4-hydroxy-6-phenylpyrimidine.
