To a stirring solution of (±)2-hydroxy-5-(p-toluenesulfonyloxymethyl)-tetrahydrofuran (example 58) (4.20 g, 15.44 mmol), pyridine (2.75 mL, 33.97 mmol) and DMAP (catalytic) in methylene chloride (100 mL) at rt was added acetic anhydride (2.91 mL, 30.88 mmol). After stirring the solution for 1 h, it was washed with water (50 mL), 1 N HCl (50 mL), saturated NaHCO3 (50 mL), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give the title compound as a 1:1 mixture of cis and trans isomers (4.85 g, 100%).
