Procedure
A mixture of 18 ml of POCl3 with 6 g of methyl 4-(3,4-dihydro-4-oxo-6-methyl-thieno-[2,3-d]-pyrimidin-2-yl)-benzoate is boiled for 4 hours with the addition of 1.8 ml of N,N-dimethylaniline. Customary working up gives 5 g of methyl 4-(4-chloro-6-methyl-thieno-[2,3-d]-pyrimidin-2-yl)-benzoate.
