The reaction was repeated using 3-acetyl-dihydro-2(3H)-furanone, sodium hydroxide and benzaldehyde to produce 3-phenyl methylene-dihydro-2(3H)-furanone. The crude yellow solid obtained from the reaction was recrystallized from chloroform to recover 3-phenylmethylene-dihydro-2(3H)-furanone, a yellow crystalline solid melting at 116° C. Proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectra for the product were as follows: 1HNMR (CDCl3) δ7.526(t,1H, J=3 Hz), 7.45 (m,5H), 4.42(t,2H, J=7.6 Hz) 3.208 (dt, 2H, J=7.6, 3.0 Hz) 13CNMR (CDCl3) δ172.455, 136.414, 134.598, 129.963, 129.805, 128.904, 123.685, 65.447, 27.368
