12N Hydrochloric acid (2 ml) was added to ethyl 7-amino-1-(5-amino-4-fluoro-2-methylphenyl)-6-fluoro-8-methyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylate (230 mg), and the mixture was stirred for 3 hours while heating under reflux. After the reaction mixture was allowed to cool, solids deposited were collected by filtration. The solids were washed with water, ethanol and diethyl ether in that order and dried to obtain the title compound (42 mg) as a pale yellow powder.
