Procedure
1,3,4,6,11,11a-Hexahydro-2H-benzo[b]quinolizin-6-one (3.78 g, 18.7 mmol) was dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid (50 ml) at 0° C., potassium nitrate (2.02 g, 20 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was poured onto ice (200 g) and was partially neutralized with concentrated ammonium hydroxide. The precipitate was collected and air-dried to give the title compound as a yellow solid (4.22 g, 92%), m.p. 137-42° C.
