Procedure

A mixture of chloral (2) (25 g), triethylamine (0.7 ml) and ethyl thioglycolate (1) (18.6 ml) dissolved in benzene (200 ml) is stirred for 1.5 hours. Triethylamine (1.5 ml) and methyl isothiocyanate (10.2 ml) are added thereto and the mixture is stirred for 3 hours. The reaction mixture is poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract is washed with water and evaporated to dryness to give ethyl 2-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-thiocarbamoylethyl)thioacetate (3). Yield: 10.4 g.
