0.03 g. of sodium and 0.8 g. of n-butyl alcohol are refluxed for 5 hours in 50 ml. of dry benzene. After this time, 3 g. of 3-butyl-7-chloro-5-methyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid, ethyl ester obtained in Example 3 c are added and the mixture is refluxed for 12 hours. After the inorganic precipitate has been filtered off, the solvent is removed in vacuo and the residue distilled to obtain 7-butoxy-3-butyl-5-methyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid, ethyl ester, b.p. 210°-220°/0.01. Yield 2.1 g. (66%).
