PROCEDURE

A solution of dimethyl 3-methyl-2-oxoheptylphosphonate (2.36 g.) in tetrahydrofuran (20 ml.) was added dropwise to a stirred suspension of sodium hydride (0.24 g.) in tetrahydrofuran (50 ml.). The mixture was stirred at room temperature until the evolution of hydrogen had ceased, then treated dropwise with a solution of 3-formyl-2-(7-hydroxyheptyl)-5-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)cyclopentanol [3.28 g.; prepared as described above in Example 2(e)] in tetrahydrofuran (20 ml.) and stirred for a further 2 hours. The mixture was acidified to pH 4 by the addition of glacial acetic acid, the solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue dissolved in diethyl ether. The ethereal solution was washed with aqueous sodium carbonate solution, dried over magnesium sulphate, and evaporated to dryness to give 2-(7-hydroxyheptyl)-3-(4-methyl-3-oxooct-1-enyl)-5-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)cyclopentanol (4.1 g.).
