To an ice cold solution of 3.5 g 2,2-dimethyl-N-[2-(2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-2-yl)phenyl]propanamide in 35 ml CH2Cl2 was added 8.4 ml triethylamine, followed by dropwise addition of 4.2 ml acetic anhydride. The resulting solution was stirred at room temperature for two hours and then quenched with water. The organic layer was washed successively with 5% aq. HCl, water, saturated NaHCO3 and brine, and dried (MgSO4). Concentration, trituration with hexane and recrystallization from toluene/hexane gave 3.1 g solid, m.p. 184°-186° C.
