30 ml of o-dichlorobenzene was added to a mixture of 2.0 g of N-benzyl-3-methyl-6-(2-nitrophenyl)-phthalimide and 4.2 g of triphenylphosphine. The mixture was refluxed for 8 hours. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography (eluant: toluene/ethyl acetate=50/1), followed by recrystallization from n-propanol to obtain 850 mg (yield: 47%) of N-benzyl-2-methylcarbazole-3,4-dicarboximide as yellow crystals.
