Procedure
9,10-Dihydro-4,5-dihydroxy-9,10-dioxo-2-hydroxymethyl-anthracene (aloe-emodin) (45 g) and anhydrous potassium carbonate (225 g) were mechanically stirred in `Drierire` dried acetone (2.5 l) and `Drierite` dried dioxan (1l) before adding dimethyl sulphate (67.5 ml; 89.8 g). The mixture was heated at reflux for 20.5 hours.
