Procedure
A mixture of 300 mg 5-amino-3-hydroxy-2-methylbenzoic acid and 265 mg of phtalic anhydride in 12 ml of dimethylformamide was heated to 110° C. for 2 hours, and subsequently to 150° C. for another 2 hours. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo and the residue was crystallized from ethanol/diethylether to give 310 mg of 5-(1,3-dioxo-1,3-dihydro-isoindol-2-yl)-3-hydroxy-2-methylbenzoic acid as white crystals, m.p. >250° C.
