3.4 g (10.7 mmol) of 3-[2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-(R,S)-isoquinolinyl]phenylacetic acid are treated with 17.6 ml of thionyl chloride with stirring. The mixture is refluxed for one hour. The mixture is then evaporated to dryness. 3-[2-Methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-(R,S)-isoquinolinyl]phenylacetyl chloride is obtained.
