51.9 g (0.3 mol) of 4-bromophenol and 19.2 g (0.1 mol) of methyl 3-phenyl-2,3-epoxybutyrate are stirred at 100° C. for 8 hours and at room temperature for 12 hour. After removal of the excess phenol by distillation, the residue is purified by flash chromatography (silica gel, n-hexane/ethyl acetate 9:1) to result in 7.2 g of a white solid.
