Procedure
(Z)-5-Fluoro-2-methyl-1-(p-methylsulfonylbenzylidene)-3-indenylacetic acid (20 g, 53.70 mmol) was suspended in dichloromethane (400 mL). Oxalylchloride (2M in CH2Cl2; 35 mL; 70 mmol) was added at room temperature. The reaction mixture was refluxed (24 h), and was evaporated to yield the title compound, which was used as such in the next step.
