To a solution of 8.73 g of potassium hydroxide in 140 mL of cold water was dissolved methyl (S)-3-benzyloxybutyrate (18) (24.21 g). The solution was stirred in an ice bath for one hour and at room temperature for one hour. Methanol was added to give a clear solution and the reaction was stirred overnight.
