Procedure

0.92 g of 7-benzyl-2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)hypoxanthine obtained in Example 2 was dissolved in 18 ml of acetic acid and 3 ml of 48% aqueous solution of hydrogen bromide, and the resulting solution was stirred for 16 hours at 120° C. After removing acetic acid by evaporation under vacuum, water was added and the mixture was stirred for a while. The solid precipitate produced was separated by filtration, washed with water, and dried under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography and dried under reduced pressure to obtain 0.85 g of 7-benzyl-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)hypoxanthine (yield 53%).
