To 10 mL of 1,4-dioxane was added the following reagents: (3E)-3-(4-bromo-5,5-dimethylfuran-2(5H)-ylidene)-6-fluoro-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one (100 mg, 0.31 mmol), 4-formylphenylboronic acid (56 mg, 0.37 mmol), PdCl2(PPh3)2 (22 mg, 0.031 mmol), 1M Na2CO3 aqueous solution (1.2 mL, 1.2 mmol). The mixture was heated at 80° C. under N2 for 1 hour, cooled to room temperature and poured into 100 mL of water. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL). The organic layers were combined, washed with brine (50 mL), dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated to give the crude product, which was purified through silica gel column with 1-5% MeOH/CHCl3 to give 4-[(5E)-5-(6-fluoro-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-3H-indol-3-ylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-2,5-dihydrofuran-3-yl]benzaldehyde as orange/red solid. Yield: 100 mg, 93%.
