To 10 mL of 1,4-dioxane was added (3E)-3-(4-bromo-5,5-dimethylfuran-2(5H)-ylidene)-5,6-difluoro-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one (85 mg, 0.25 mmol), 4-formylphenylboronic acid (45 mg, 0.30 mmol), PdCl2(PPh3)2 (10 mg, 0.014 mmol), 2M Na2CO3 aqueous solution (0.5 mL, 10 mmol). The mixture was heated at 80° C. under N2 for 30 minutes. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was diluted with EtOAc (80 mL). The EtOAc solution was washed with brine (2×50 mL), dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated to give 4-[(5E)-5-(5,6-difluoro-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-3H-indol-3-ylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-2,5-dihydrofuran-3-yl]benzaldehyde as the crude product, which was used in the next step without further purification.
