To (2′-bromomethyl-6-methoxy-4′-trifluoromethyl-biphenyl-3-yl)-acetic acid ethyl ester (0.103 g, 0.24 mmol) and phenol (0.012 g, 0.26 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (2 mL) was added sodium hydride (60% in mineral oil; 0.013 g, 0.29 mmol), and the reaction was stirred at 55° C. overnight. The mixture was quenched with H2O, and the solution was used directly in the hydrolysis step.
