A mixture of 5-(chloromethyl)-N-(3-chlorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidin-2-amine (544 mg), potassium phthalimide (626 mg), and N,N-dimethylformamide (5.44 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 20 hours. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain crude 2-({2-[(3-chlorophenyl)amino]-4-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidin-5-yl}methyl)-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione as a pale yellow powder.
