Procedure

To a solution of ethyl 2-(2,6-difluorophenyl)-5-(thiophen-2-yl)oxazole-4-carboxylate (0.096 g, 0.29 mmol) in MeOH (6 mL) was added 1M potassium hydroxide solution (8 mL, 8.0 mmol) and the resulting mixture stirred at 55° C. overnight. The reaction was cooled to room temperature, acidified with 4N HCl and extracted with DCM. The combined organic phase was dried over MgSO4 and the solvent removed in vacuo to afford 2-(2,6-difluorophenyl)-5-(thiophen-2-yl)oxazole-4-carboxylic acid (0.078 g, 0.25 mmol, 89%) as an off white solid which was used without further purification. LCMS (1) Rt: 1.41 min; m/z (ES+) 308.
