To a stirred solution of (±)-2-(trimethylsilyl)ethyl 7-bromo-2,3-dihydrospiro[indene-1,4′-piperidine]-3-ylcarbamate (23 mg, 0.056 mmol), ortho-(trifluoromethyl)cinnamic acid (16 mg, 0.074 mmol) and i-Pr2NEt (0.027 mL, 0.15 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (3 mL) was added solid HATU (28 mg, 0.0.074 mmol). The mixture was stirred overnight at rt and evaporated to leave a residue which was purified by preparative HPLC to afford (±)-(E)-2-(trimethylsilyl)ethyl 7-bromo-1′-(3-(2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)acryloyl)-2,3-dihydrospiro[indene-1,4′-piperidine]-3-ylcarbamate (16.5 mg, 47%).
