To a solution of (S)-7-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-isoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (19.3 g) in 100 mL MeOH was added hydrochloric acid (100 mL, 4M solution in dioxane) at room temperature, and the reaction mixture was heated to reflux and stirred at 70° C. for 16 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to give (S)-7-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-isoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester hydrochloride salt with quantitative yield. The product was used in the next step without further purification.
