Procedure
1-(2-Chlorophenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol (1.0 g, 4.66 mmol) was diluted with dichloromethane (5 ml) and, under reflux, a solution of phosphorus oxychloride (0.65 g, mmol) in dichloromethane (3 ml) was added dropwise over 40 min. After the dropwise addition, the mixture was refluxed for 6 h. The mixture after completion of the reaction was concentrated, and after addition of ether (dry, 5 ml), concentrated again to dryness to give the title compound (1.23 g, 90%) as colorless crude crystals.
