Methyl 3,5-dibromo-4-(bromomethyl)benzoate (INTERMEDIATE 24) (3.9 g) was dissolved in acetonitrile (100 mL) and to this was added 4 Å molecular sieves and N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (1.18 g) and the reaction heated to 50° C. for 12 h. The reaction mixture was poured into brine and extracted into ethyl acetate, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography eluting with 90% hexane:10% ethyl acetate to give the title compound. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3): δ 10.27 (s, 1H); 8.29 (s, 2H); 3.99 (s, 3H).
