2-(Benzyloxy)-5-(2-bromoacetyl)benzamide (11.3 g, 32.30 mmol) was dissolved in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (250 mL) and cooled in an ice bath. The solution was diluted with ethanol (250 mL). Sodium borohydride (1.2 g, 32.3 mmol) was added in three portions. Following addition the solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water, brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solution was filtered and the solvent evaporated to dryness in vacuo to yield crude title compound (10.88 g, 31.06 mmol).
