Procedure

To a solution of 1-(3-cyanopropyl)-5-(2,6-dichlorobenzyloxy)-1H-indole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (2.0 g, 4.64 mmol), from Example 1(c), in THF (20 mL) at room temperature was added lithium borohydride (0.25g, 11.6 mmol). The reaction was refluxed for 20 h and then quenched slowly by adding methanol until the evolution of gas ceased. The reaction was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was washed with brine and dried over Na2SO4. Filtration and evaporation of the solvent yielded the desired alcohol as a white solid (1.73 g, 96%). MS(ES) m/e 389.0 [M+H]+.
