Procedure

A mixture of benzyl butyrylacetate (22.0 g, 0.10 mol) and 10 g of 4 A molecular sieves was treated with ammonia gas which was bubbled through the mixture for 38 hrs at 50° C. After filtration, benzyl 3-amino-2-hexenoate was obtained as a yellowish oil (21 g, 95%).
