Procedure
A suspension of ethyl (R/S) 3-(1-acetyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-5-yl)-heptanoate [3.95 g, Reference Example 11(b)] in aqueous hydrochloric acid (120 mL, 6M) was heated at 85° C. for 7 hours. After cooling to room temperature the mixture was evaporated. The residue was treated with toluene and the solvent evaporated under reduced pressure (repeated twice more). Final drying in a dessicator afforded the title compound (4.13 g) as an orange-brown oil. LC-MS: RT=3.36 minutes; M (ES+) 248 (MH+).
