Procedure
2.00 g (5.97 mmol) of the 4-acetylthio-1-(α-cyclopropylcarbonyl-2-fluorobenzyl)piperidine obtained in the above-described step (a) were dissolved in 50 ml of ethanol. An appropriate amount of a hydrogen chloride gas was blown through the resulting solution and the resulting mixture was allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. The solvent was then distilled off under reduced pressure. The residue was crystallized from diethyl ether, whereby 1.95 g of 1-(α-cyclopropylcarbonyl-2-fluorobenzyl)-4-mercaptopiperidine hydrochloride were obtained as faintly brown crystals (yield: 99%).
