Procedure

1.22 g of the (E)-4-acetylthio-1-(2-chloro-α-methoxycarbonylbenzyl)-3-ethoxycarbonylmethylidenepiperidine obtained in the above-described step (a) were dissolved in 50 ml of methanol was dissolved. An appropriate amount of hydrogen chloride gas was blown through the resulting solution and the resulting mixture was allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. The residue after the removal of the solvent under reduced pressure was crystallized from diethyl ether, whereby 1.25 g of a mixture of (E)-1-(2-chloro-α-methoxycarbonylbenzyl)-3-ethoxycrbonylmethylidene-4-mercaptopiperidine hydrochloride and (E)-1-(2-chloro-α-methoxycarbonylbenzyl)-4-mercapto-3-methoxycarbonylmethylidene-piperidine hydrochloride was obtained.
