Procedure

A solution of 2-{4-[2-(2-biphenyl-4-yl-5-methyloxazol-4-yl)-ethoxy]-2-methylphenoxy}-2-methylpropionic acid ethyl ester (11.8 mmol) in THF (30 mL) and methanol (60 mL) was treated with 5N aqueous NaOH (20 mL). The solution was heated at 55° C. for 1 h, cooled to ambient temperature, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was treated with ice water (20 mL), acidified with 5N aqueous HCl (25 mL), and extracted with ethyl acetate (200 mL). The organic layer was washed with brine (40 mL), dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated to yield the desired product. mp 122-123° C.; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ8.07 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.67 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.62 (dt, J=6.8, 1.2 Hz, 2H), 7.45 (tt, J=6.8, 1.2 Hz, 2H), 7.37 (tt, J=7.2, 2.0 Hz, 1H), 6.82 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 1H), 6.71 (d, J=3.2 Hz, 1H), 6.57 (dd, J=8.8, 3.2 Hz, 1H), 4.16 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 2H), 3.82 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 2H), 2.40 (s, 3H), 2.21 (s, 3H), 1.56 (s, 6H).
