A solution of 3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-nitro-phenyl)-propionic acid (prepared as in Example 22, 263 mg, 1.0 mmol) in methylene chloride (5 mL) was cooled to 0° C. and then treated with a 2.0M solution of oxalyl chloride in methylene chloride (0.6 mL, 1.2 mmol) and a few drops of N,N-dimethylformamide. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 15 min and then at 25° C. for 1 h. The reaction mixture was then treated with a solution of 2-aminopyridine (207 mg, 2.2 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (5 mL) and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (0.42 mL, 2.5 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 24 h. At this time, the reaction was concentrated in vacuo. Flash chromatography (Merck Silica gel 60, 230-400 mesh, 80/20 hexanes/ethyl acetate) afforded 3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-nitro-phenyl)-N-pyridin-2-yl-propionamide (110.2 mg, 32.5%) as a white solid: mp 152-154° C.; EI-HRMS m/e calcd for C19H21N3O3 (M+) 339.1582, found 339.1581.
