4-Benzyloxycyclohexanone 41 is dissolved in 30 mL of 50% ethanol containing ammonium carbonate and potassium cyanide is added (Step 38). The mixture will be warmed to 60° C. for 2 h and evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The residue is extracted with 40 mL of hot methanol, filtered, and the filter cake washed with 20 mL of hot methanol. The methanol solutions are combined, solvent evaporated, and the residue chromatographed on silica gel using CH2Cl2 /methanol 90:10 to yield 42.
