Procedure

2-Acetyl-6-bromopyridine from example 1 (20.0 g, 100 mmol) was treated with bromine (6.2 mL, 0.12 mol) at reflux in 200 mL of CHCl3 for 45 min. The solution was cooled to room temperature then washed with dilute aqueous NaHCO3 /Na2S2O3. The organic phase was dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and evaporated to give an oil. The oil was dissolved in 200 mL of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 30 mL of pyridine was added. The resulting solution was refluxed for 30 min. The mixture was cooled and filtered to give 26.1 g of off-white powder (73% yield); mp 256° C. (decomposition; discolors at 245° C.). The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) spectra were consistent with the assigned structure and the product was homogeneous by TLC.
