Reaction Steps

A mixture of 6-cyano-4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (4 mmol) and 480 mg of 10% Pd/C in 130 ml of acetic acid is hydrogenated (H2, 50 psi) at 45° C. for 22 hours. The reaction mixture is filtered and the solvent is stripped, the residue is triturated with methanol, filtered and dried to provide the desired product as the acetic acid salt.
