Procedure
A suspension of 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine-6-carboxaldehyde (8.93 mmol) in a mixture of 70 mL of THF and 70 mL of absolute EtOH is treated with 1 g of NaBH4 and then heated to reflux for 15 minutes under N2. After cooling, the organic solvents are removed, the residue is heated for 30 minutes at reflux in dilute NaHCO3, cooled, filtered, washed with H2O, then dried to give the desired product.
