A solution of ethyl4,4-dimethyl-3-oxopentanoate (Alfa Aesar, 2.4 g, 14 mmol) and 3,4-difluorobenzylamine (Aldrich, 2.0 g, 14 mmol) in toluene (15 ml) was refluxed for 24 h. The solvent was removed to yield the title compound as an off-white wax. Used without further purification.
