Procedure
To the solution of 5-m-tolyl-1H-indole (3, 4 mmol, 1 equiv.) in anhydrous dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) was added NaH (60% in mineral oil dispersion, 4.8 mmol, 1.2 equiv.) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred for about 1 h at the same temperature, then 1-chloro-3-methylbut-2-ene (4, 4.8 mmol, 1.2 equiv.) was added and the mixture was stirred for 4 h. Water was added to stop the reaction. The mixture was extracted by dichloromethane and the organic layer was washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and evaporated. The residue was purified by column chromatography of silica gel to get off-yellow oil. Yield: 87.1%. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 1.82 (s, 3 H), 1.88 (s, 3 H), 2.48 (s, 3 H), 4.74 (d, J=6.6 Hz, 2 H), 5.45 (t, J=6.9 Hz, 1 H), 6.57 (d, J=2.4 Hz, 1 H), 7.17 (t, J=3.3 Hz, 2 H), 7.34-7.43 (m, 2H), 7.49-7.52 (m, 3H), 7.89 (s, 1H). 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3) δ 18.0, 21.6, 25.6, 44.2, 101.3, 109.6, 119.4, 119.9, 121.2, 124.4, 126.9, 128.0, 128.2, 128.5, 129.2, 132.9, 135.5, 136.3, 138.1, 142.6.
