Procedure
20 g of methyl epoxypropionate were mixed with 20 g of acetonitrile, 1.5 g of benzyl-trimethylammonium chloride and 1.5 g of ZnBr2. The homogeneous mixture was transferred to a 100 ml pressurized reactor and carboxylated for 6 days at 25° C. and a CO2 pressure of 30 bar. Following carboxylation, the mixture was diluted with 100 g of acetonitrile. The mixture was purified with aluminium oxide and activated carbon. Then, the acetonitrile was distilled off. This gave 4-methoxycarbonyl-2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane (purity 72% (GC), yield 65%).
