Benzhydrylidene-[4-(2-ethyl-5,7-dimethyl-pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin-3-ylmethyl)-phenyl]-amine (12) (3.97 g, 8.93 mmol) was dissolved in a mixture of water (40 ml), EtOH (10 ml) and conc. HCl (10 ml) and stirred at rt for 1 h. The reaction mixture was basified to pH 11 with Na2 CO3. The organic layer was extracted with EtOAc, washed with water and brine, dried over Na2 SO4 and concentrated to afford an orange oil. The crude product was purified by chromatography (2-50% EtOAc in cyclohexane) to afford a yellow solid.
