Procedure

To a flask charged with methyl 2-(5-(3,5-difluorophenyl)furo[3,2-b]pyridin-3-yl)acetate (1.46 g, 5 mmol) was added MeOH (1.5 mL), H2O (0.5 mL), followed by NaOH (2 mL, 6 M, 12 mmol) to generate a yellow solution, which was capped and maintained at rt for 18 h. The solution was acidified with conc. HCl to pH=3 and poured into CH2Cl2. The layers were separated and the organic layer was extracted with CH2Cl2 (2×10 mL), followed by EtOAc (2×10 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to produce a colorless solid, which was of sufficient purity for use in the next step.
