Methyl 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(piperidin-1-yl)acetate (400 mg, 1.52 mmol) was dissolved in THF/water (12 ml/4 ml). Lithium hydroxide hydrate (127 mg, 3.04 mmol) was added and the solution was stirred at room temperature for 8 hours. Then a second portion of lithium hydroxide hydrate (63.7 mg, 1.52 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at 40° C. for 16 hours, then at 50° C. for 7 hours. The solvents were evaporated, the residue was taken up with Et2O and the insoluble were filtered off. The clear solution was evaporated to obtain lithium 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(piperidin-1-yl)acetate (384 mg, 99% yield) as a white solid.
