Reaction Steps
To a solution of ethyl 1-formyl-4-oxo-4H-quinolizine-3-carboxylate (see Example 1, 10.1 g, 41.0 mmol) in a mixture of 137 mL of THF and 68 mL of ethanol was added aqueous sodium hydroxide (1N, 43.1 mL, 43.1 mmol). After 4 h, the reaction was concentrated in vacuo to provide sodium 1-formyl-4-oxo-4H-quinolizine-3-carboxylate that gave a mass ion (ES+) of 218.1 for [M+H]+.
