To a stirred solution of methyl 4-amino-3-hydroxybenzoate (4.45 g, 26.6 mmol) in THF (250 ml) at room temperature, thiophosgene (2.4 mL, 32 mmol) was added slowly via a syringe pump over a period of 1 hr. After stirring for 4 hr, excess thiophosgene was quenched by addition of a saturated aqueous solution of NH4Cl (100 mL), and the THF was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. More water was added, and the aqueous mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3×). The Combined organic phase was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), concentrated in vacuo to give Compound 4 as a tan solid.
