Procedure
1,3-Dihydro-2H-isoindole-1-carboxylic acid, hydrochloride (0.31 g, 1.9 mmol), p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (0.4 g, 2.09 mmol), and Na2CO3 (0.403 g, 3,8 mmol) were dissolved in water (4 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 20 hr. The residue was dissolved in water and washed with EtOAc. The aqueous layer was acidified with concentrated HCl and extracted with CH2Cl2 (2X). The organic layers were dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by HPLC to give N-[4-methylbenzenesulfonyl]-1,3-dihydro-2H-isoindole-1-carboxylic acid (0.047 g). MS m/e 318.1 (M+)
