Procedure
A solution of 4-(2-chloroethyl)-1-(triphenylmethyl)imidazole (5.89 g, 15.8 mmol) and piperazine (27.2 g, 316 mmol) in ethanol (80 mL) were heated to reflux for 2 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue partitioned between methylene chloride and saturated sodium bicarbonate. The organic layer was separated, washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to provide the titled product as a yellow oil which was sufficiently pure for use in the next step.
