The methyl 2-[(4′-methoxy[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)sulfonyl]amino-3-phenylmethoxy-4,5-epoxypentanoate 63e (285 mg, 0.558 mmol) is dissolved in benzene/triethylamine (2.5 mL, 0.101 mmol) and 2-mercaptothiazole (164 mg, 1.40 mmol) is added. The resulting mixture is then stirred at room temperature for four hours. The mixture is diluted with ethyl acetate and water and extracted with ethyl acetate (3 times). The organic layer is washed with water and brine, then dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to a clear oil. The crude material is adsorbed onto silica and purified over a silica column eluting with ethyl acetate/hexane (2/8) followed with ethyl acetate/hexane (1/1). Product fractions are combined and the solvent is removed in vacuo to give the desired product as a clear oil.
